Meet Coach Jo

I'm Jo, part of the Aragona Martial Arts Family, and I lead our Ladies BJJ Classes.

I know that walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel a little daunting. My aim is to make those first steps welcoming, fun and completely pressure-free.

I'd love more women to come and have a go to see how it feels!

I came to BJJ through watching, then aged 42, helping out in the kids class. That pace suited me, ha ha. With the welcoming attitude and support of everyone at the club I gained more and more confidence in BJJ and now I love it as a game and a great way to keep fit. At first I really felt out of my comfort zone but soon became at ease with the close contact and new movements. I loved it straight away but it took me quite a while to feel confident. With regular attendance, encouragement and support from my coach and the other players I found my way. I love BJJ because I feel like I get the sense of belonging I used to get from a netball team, but without the pressure of having to perform for anyone other than myself. I do this for me and I can train as often as I like. There's always something new to learn as the club and the game keeps progressing ad infinitum! I wish I could explain to ladies how this feels when you get into it, but the only way is to show up and give it a try!
