So, you’ve decided to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) – congratulations! Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for fitness, self-defence, or the love of learning something new, Aragona Martial Arts is here to guide you. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare for your first class.
What to Wear
For your first class, we will lend you a club gi to train in so wear comfortable athletic wear (rash guard and shorts/leggings). Once you have your own gi it should be fresh and free from any odours, so always shower before class. Ensure your nails (hands and feet) are short and clean to prevent accidental scratches.
The Concept of BJJ
BJJ is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on technique, leverage, and strategy rather than brute strength. It teaches you how to control and submit an opponent using positional dominance and joint locks or chokes. The journey requires patience, but with dedication, it becomes one of the most rewarding martial arts.
Etiquette at Aragona Martial Arts
Respect is key in BJJ, and following proper etiquette ensures a great training environment:
Before Entering the Mat Space: Remove your shoes and place them on the shoe shelves. Bow before stepping onto the mats.
Greeting Coaches & Teammates: Always greet the highest-ranking coach first with a fist bump and say “Oss,” then greet the other students the same way.
Tying Your Belt: Learn to tie your belt properly and always turn away from the coach while tying it.
During Instruction: Pay full attention to the coach, listen carefully, and only talk about Jiu-Jitsu while class is in session. Save casual conversations for after class in the club cafe.
Class Structure
Here’s what a typical class looks like:
Warm-Up: Start with a light jog around the mats, adding movements to warm up your joints and muscles.
Fundamental Drills: Learn essential BJJ movements, such as hip escapes and break-falls.
Technique Drills: The coach will demonstrate a technique step by step. You and your partner will then practice, focusing on precision and control.
Rolling (Live Training): Beginners start with positional games to feel the movement of BJJ without pressure. The tapping system (submitting safely) is explained to ensure safety for all students.
The Journey Ahead
BJJ can feel overwhelming at first, but every experienced practitioner started as a beginner. The Aragona Martial Arts community is patient and supportive, helping you progress at your own pace. Whether your goal is fitness, weight loss, dynamic movement, or competition, your coach will help tailor your journey to your ambitions. Our coaches are also here for you outside of class to answer any questions or give any BJJ advice.
Keep Showing Up
The most important thing in BJJ is consistency. Show up, work hard, and enjoy the process. The more you put in, the more you get out of it. Over time, you’ll build confidence, skill, and a deep appreciation for the art.
